Engine and Transmission

The North American version of the all-new 2011 Jetta features the powerful and efficient German engineering drivers have come to expect from Volkswagen. Four engines will be available in the U.S. and Canada, including a 2.0-liter turbodiesel direct injection (TDI) Clean Diesel featuring common rail injection with 236 lbs-ft. of torque (320 Newton-meters). The engine runs as quietly as a gasoline engine, but yields the power of a sports car achieving 0-60 mph in 8.7 seconds. Additional engines include the 2.0, 2.5 R5, and as of 2011, the 2.0 TSI. All Jetta engines will be offered with a manual transmission as standard equipment. An automatic transmission will also be available with each engine version as an option. On the new 2.0-liter TDI and 2.0-liter TSI, Volkswagen will offer the 6-speed DSG – one of the most advanced and efficient automatic transmission systems in the world. In the U.S., S, SE, SEL and TDI versions of the Jetta will be available, as will a 2.0-liter GLI.

Exterior

The all-new 2011 Jetta has been completely overhauled, inside and out. Its new wheelbase and exterior length are significantly bigger than its predecessor – resulting in superior performance, more space and greater comfort. At 182.7-inches long, 57.1 inches tall and 70.1 inches wide, it is more than 3.5 inches longer than its predecessors. The interplay of exterior dimensions leads to a powerful balance of proportions. In parallel, the new Volkswagen 'design DNA' sharpens the car's styling. This has resulted in clear, precise lines and athletically muscular surfaces, which lend a timeless elegance and dynamic styling to the sedan.

On the front end of the car, the prominence of horizontal lines defines the design. The high-gloss black radiator grille combines with the car's trapezoidal headlights to form a styling unit. Under this is the fully painted bumper, which is designed as cleanly as a sculpted surface. Below that, another cooling air intake and the tray-shaped front spoiler gives the car a sporty finish. The upper front end section shows a powerful transition from the v-shaped engine hood to the fenders on the sides; the shoulder section realized here derived from the NCC concept car, and provides dynamic and muscular styling.

The styling characteristics in the side profile of the Jetta meld into yet another interpretation of the 'design DNA' conceptualized by Walter de Silva, the Italian Head of Design for the Volkswagen Group and the German Head of Design for the Volkswagen Brand, Klaus Bischoff. A great example of the unique styling characteristics is found in the shoulder or 'tornado' line and the powerfully emphasized arches of the wheel wells. Formally, they intersect the large homogeneous surfaces, conveying a strong dynamic image. Thanks to wide track dimensions, the wheel arches also form a precise transition – as though cut with a knife – up to the tires, which could be as much as 18-inches.

With integrated turn signal indicators, the styling of the outside mirrors emulates the larger CC. Compared with the previous model, the all-new Jetta has grown in clarity and pre-eminence in its side profile. Harmonized surfaces and sporty shoulders dominate the rear section. Powerful in illumination and visually distinctive, the taillights are split into two sections, extending on either side from the fender into the tailgate.

Interior

A key benefit of the extended wheelbase is that it resulted in a more comfortable layout of the five-seat rear seating area. Legroom is now a long 38.1 inches, a 2.6-inch gain from the previous model. Customers looking for a more personalized touch can for the first time have interior accents changed out at a Volkswagen dealer.

Engineers went to work on the interior down to the finest details, providing a level of quality and perfection far beyond other vehicles in its class. A common conceptual thread throughout the car is the intuitive controls and well-arranged instruments. The new steering wheel designs impress both visually and to the touch. The right hand rests ergonomically on the gear shift grip. Further up on the center console are the newly designed and intuitive controls for climate, radio and radio-navigation systems. This console section is slightly inclined toward the driver for ideal alignment of the cockpit. Also in optimal view are the round instruments. The multifunction display (trip computer) is located between them.

The rear bench seatback is split 40/60 and folds, increasing the car's versatility. The tailgate can also be opened from inside the car by a remote unlock switch. Up to six airbags (two front airbags, two side airbags in front, two window airbags/thorax airbags in the area of the front side windows) are also part of the equipment package.

Safety

Previous Jetta versions received accolades for safety with features like electronic stability control and tire pressure monitoring standard. The all-new 2011 Jetta has been further enhanced with even more protections and crash safety improvements

“Green” Racing at its Best in Virginia as 25 Young, Up-and-Coming Drivers Hit the Track

Herndon, Va. (April 21, 2010) – This weekend, the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup and Series partner, Safety-Kleen Systems, will open the 2010 season just one day after Earth Day in proper fashion by providing some of the most environmentally conscious racing in the country. The Series will once again be using clean diesel fuel in its racecars, demonstrating its commitment to the environment. In the season’s ten events, the Jetta TDI Cup cars will consume approximately two tanks of clean diesel fuel during race conditions. All Volkswagen clean diesel TDI models are certified to run on B5 biodiesel, a mix of 5 percent biodiesel and 95 percent petro diesel.

Following the same green consciousness off the track, the Jetta TDI Cup’s equipment transport vehicles and generators are also powered by B5 Biofuel. In addition, the Series uses biodegradable tableware, lounge furniture with high recycled content, energy-efficient lighting and water stations that reduce the reliance on plastic water bottles.

The SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup was launched in 2008 as way to introduce clean diesel technology to the U.S. market and develop the best of motorsport’s up-and-coming talent. Volkswagen Showcases Second Generation Touareg Featuring Hybrid Powertrain at the 2010 New York International Auto Show
HERNDON, Va., March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Volkswagen of America, Inc. today unveiled the second generation Touareg, showcasing the brand's first-ever hybrid at the 2010 New York International Auto Show.

Taking the Touareg to the forefront of its class are three available engines to suit a variety of different drivers: A V6 FSI® gasoline engine, a V6 TDI® Clean Diesel engine, and a V6 TSI® gasoline hybrid engine.
With the hybrid model, a 3.0-liter supercharged, direct injection V6 gasoline engine is paired with a special electric motor that reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by about 40 percent.
An eight-speed automatic transmission – the first of its kind in an SUV – keeps power always available while helping the Touareg Hybrid achieve approximately 25 and 21 mpg during highway and city driving respectively. A special clutch can disengage the transmission from the engine when the engine is not powering the Touareg, allowing it to coast forward emission free to further aid in fuel savings. The electric motor can also recover kinetic energy during braking to help recharge the nickel metal-hydride battery pack. With the V6 engine and electric motor combined, a total of 375 horsepower and 428 lbs.-ft. of torque are available, allowing for full towing capacity of up to 7,700 pounds.

Also available is Volkswagen's 3.0-liter, V6 TDI® Clean Diesel engine, which offers improved fuel economy, reduced emissions, and greater power versus a similarly-sized gasoline engine, and is an excellent complement to the new Touareg's athletic design. A 3.6-liter, V6 FSI® gasoline engine comes standard with the 2011 model, providing smooth acceleration and all around performance. On all Touareg models, Volkswagen's 4MOTION® all-wheel drive system is ready to tackle nearly any driving condition encountered on and off the road.
Matching the new Touareg's refinements under the hood is a fully-revised exterior that embraces the brand's new face and styling cues, created by Volkswagen's chief of design, Walter de'Silva.

At the front is a narrower grille opening that seamlessly connects to the trapezoidal headlight housings that carry U-shaped LED running lights and Bi-Xenon High Intensity Gas-Discharged headlamps. The housings flow into the new fender flares, and a pair of compact fog lamps at the lower portion of the front fascia stand underneath the Touareg's front air intakes.
The hood features a raised portion that runs from the grille back, finishing at the side mirrors and giving a more muscular overall appearance. A chrome accent strip carries from behind the front wheels, and runs along the bottom of the doors to complement the chrome touches bordering the windows.
The back of the Touareg is defined with pronounced curves around the hatch area, LED illuminated taillights with housings to match up front, and a blacked out lower bumper with a set of shaped, chrome exhaust tips.

Compared to its predecessor, the 2011 Touareg is wider and has a shorter overall height for a stronger presence. A longer wheelbase and greater length provide greater stability, and more room inside the cabin, while the use of new materials and other adjustments have removed nearly 450 pounds from the vehicle.

The Touareg's interior has also been refined, making for a better use of space for both the driver and passengers, as well as in the cargo area. The greater use of curves and further attention to details on the door and dash trim coincide with redesigned, full leather seating for five, and cross-stitching on all panels and surfaces. Both the front and rear passengers can enjoy greater legroom with the Touareg's new overall dimensions and fully adjustable seats, while the rear seatback can be folded at the touch of a button in the trunk, for more storage and convenience.
A seven-inch widescreen color display located between the main gauges in the dash provides the driver with the latest vehicle status information, including of the drive system in the hybrid model, turn-by-turn navigation directions, and more.
Volkswagen's new RNS850 touch screen entertainment and navigation system features an 8-inch screen, a 60GB hard drive with 18GB of space available to upload audio, video, and more, and a DVD/CD player with MP3 playback and Satellite/FM/AM stereo. The navigation system can display maps and directions in a 3-D view, and highlights major landmark highlights to further assist when traveling.

Jetta TDI Cup documentary to air on Discovery Communications’ Networks beginning the week of Jan. 18
Herndon, VA (Dec. 10, 2009) – In motorsports, there’s more to the action than what’s seen on the track by fans. Beginning the week of January 18, all of the behind-the-scenes drama of the country’s only professional clean diesel racing series will hit national television with a documentary on the season, titled “Racing Under Green.”

The 60-minute documentary takes an inside look at all of the elements that make the series unique. During the season, a broadcast crew followed the series’ 25 drivers and key leadership on track and off to capture the personalities behind the wheel of the equally-prepared Jetta TDI Cup racecars. The documentary was shot in high definition and also explores the environmentally-friendly aspects of the series, from biodiesel blends used to power the cars on the racetrack to the series’ support of CarbonFund.org. The documentary will air at various times on Discovery Communications’ Discovery Channel, Science Channel, Planet Green, and HD Theater from January 18-31. Volkswagen is currently accepting driver applications for the 2010 season at www.vwmotorsportusa.com. Potential driver candidates must be between the ages of 16 and 26 as of January 1, 2010 and hold a passport from the U.S., Canada or Mexico. In addition, drivers entering the series for the first time must not have competed in any professional racing series regardless of location. Applicants must submit their application along with a season entry fee of $45,000 by December 11, 2009 in order to be considered as a candidate. The entry fee will be fully refunded to those not chosen as a 2010 series driver.

From the driver applications, up to 125 candidates will be selected to attend the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup final driver selection event that will be held February 7-9 in Las Vegas. This final event will determine the final 25-driver lineup for the 2010 season. The final driver selection event includes three days of professional driving instruction, autocross competition, track time in a Jetta TDI Cup car, physical fitness training, a sponsorship development workshop, marketing and media training, and Volkswagen brand familiarization.

The SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup was launched in 2008 as way to introduce clean diesel technology to the U.S. market and develop the best of motorsport’s up-and-coming talent. Volkswagen Announces 2009 Jetta TDI Cup Race Broadcast Schedule

Races to air on Speed-TV beginning December 6

Herndon, VA (Nov. 24, 2009) – The 2009 SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup series produced many exciting moments, culminating with Timmy Megenbier’s Championship win. Beginning December 6, race broadcasts of the country’s only professional clean diesel racing series will begin airing on Speed-TV.

During the season, the series contested 10 races on eight circuits across North America. The 2009 campaign began with a double-race weekend at VIRginia International Raceway where two series rookies took home wins and concluded with a thrilling rain-drenched finish at Road Atlanta where local driver Mark Pombo won his final race in the series. The broadcast schedule for the first seven races of the season has been announced, and the final dates will be released at a later date. Each of the races will air in an edited 30-minute broadcast. Volkswagen of America Announces October Sales

HERNDON, Va., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Volkswagen of America, Inc. today reported October 2009 sales of 17,037 total units, representing a 7.2 percent increase over October 2008.

CC, Volkswagen's stylish four door coupe performed exceptionally well for the month with 2,349 unit sales, representing its best sales month since March.

The Jetta, consistently Volkswagen's top selling model, posted a 25 percent increase over October 2008 with 9,076 unit sales. Demonstrating that today's consumers are placing a greater emphasis on cleaner, more fuel efficient vehicles, Volkswagen's clean diesel TDI models continue to perform especially well. Jetta TDI sales accounted for 40 percent of total Jetta sedan and SportWagen sales, while sales of all TDI models accounted for 24 percent of total October sales.

ATTENTION OWNERS OF 2001 – 2008 Volkswagens: Voluntary Emissions Service Action – Ignition Coils

What is the problem?
Vehicles affected by this action may have ignition coils that could malfunction under certain conditions. If this happens, the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) will illuminate to let you know that the vehicle may experience some deterioration in performance. Please refer to your vehicle owner’s manual for additional information when the MIL comes on, and if necessary, you should take your vehicle to the nearest authorized Volkswagen dealer for diagnosis and repair as soon as possible. In some cases, a malfunctioning ignition coil may cause a vehicle to exceed Federal and/or California/Provincial emissions standards.

What is the repair?
Colonial Volkswagen will inspect and, as necessary, replace the ignition coils in affected vehicles. This work will be performed at no cost to you.

Reimbursement for Prior Coil Replacement
If you paid for ignition coil replacement prior to this program, please apply for reimbursement via First-Class mail. Simply click on the link below to view and print the required form. It provides you with the terms for reimbursement and simple instructions on how to apply. We will be pleased to receive your reimbursement request.
